Israeli forces detain dozens of medical staff in Gaza

An Israeli military raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza has led to the detention of dozens of medical staff members, sparking concern over the region’s already fragile healthcare system. Dr. Hossam Abu-Safia, the head of pediatrics at the hospital, revealed in a phone interview that more than 70 medical staff members, including the hospital director, were taken to an undisclosed location by the Israeli military.

The incident follows a series of airstrikes and ground operations carried out by Israeli troops in the northern Gaza area where the hospital is located. Dr. Abu-Safia described the situation as “very dangerous” and mentioned that Israeli troops had instructed all men between the ages of 16 and 65 to leave the building for a search.

The hospital has been struggling with shortages of fuel, water, food, and medical supplies even before the recent siege, making the care for patients left in the facility minimal. “Today the hospital has no water or power,” said Dr. Abu-Safia, adding that doctors are using primitive flashlights to care for patients.

In just 66 days, the health system in Gaza has experienced a significant decline, with only 11 hospitals remaining partially functional, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO’s representative in Gaza, Richard Peeperkorn, stated that the health system went from 36 functional hospitals to just 11 partially functional ones, with many hospitals ceasing operations due to airstrikes, damage, and fuel shortages.

The Israeli military has defended its actions, claiming that it continues to target Hamas strongholds in the area. However, the raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital, as well as the detainment of medical staff, have been heavily criticized by international medical organizations and humanitarian groups. Concerns have been raised about how the current situation could further deteriorate the already fragile healthcare system in Gaza.
