The Israeli military says it has once again fired on a target in the Lebanese capital Beirut. It spoke of a targeted attack, but initially did not provide any further details. Eyewitnesses in Beirut reported several attacks in a southern suburb of the city. The residents of individual neighborhoods were asked by Israel to evacuate.

Sounds of explosions could be heard throughout Beirut. Videos on social media showed thick clouds of smoke rising into the sky. Neighbors reported drones and fighter jets continuing to move over the city after the attacks. According to authorities, there was also an attack in Beirut’s Basta-Bachoura district. At least six people were killed and seven others injured, the Ministry of Health said. Initial reports indicate an apartment in a building was hit.

The Israeli military again called on people in the Beirut suburbs to evacuate. This is usually followed by Israeli attacks. “They are located near facilities (…) that are connected to Hezbollah, against which the Israeli army will take action in the near future,” said army spokesman Avichai Adraee on Thursday night on the online service X. He called including the districts of Haret Hreik, Burj al-Barajne and Hadath Gharb.

According to official figures, a total of 46 people were killed in Lebanon by Israeli attacks on Wednesday. The Ministry of Health in Beirut said there were also 85 injured. The highest number of victims occurred in the area around Nabatieh in southern Lebanon. According to information, 23 people were killed there.

Israel is currently carrying out massive air strikes against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. Immediately after the Islamist Palestinian organization Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, Hezbollah opened a second front against Israel with regular rocket attacks from Lebanon. Hezbollah shelling has continued to increase in recent days, particularly after the killing of long-time Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah last Friday.
