“Like all citizens of Israel and, I must say, like much of the world’s population, we are deeply shocked by this horrific massacre,” Netanyahu’s office quoted him as saying at the scene of the attack.

“Those children are our children… The State of Israel will not, cannot allow this to pass (without a response). Our response will certainly be and it will be severe.”

Dozens of residents of Majdal Shams protested during Netanyahu’s visit, which came after the burial of the last dead on Monday, for which hundreds of Druze gathered.

After Israel in 1967 seized the Golan Heights from Syria, many residents of Majdal Shams never accepted Israeli citizenship.

On Saturday, a rocket fired from Lebanon hit a soccer field in the Arab Druze city of Majdal Shams, killing 12 children between the ages of 10 and 16 who were playing on it.

The Israeli military said the strike was carried out by an Iranian-made missile with a 50-kilogram warhead launched by the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.

Hezbollah, which has regularly shelled Israeli positions on the other side of the border since the war in Gaza began in October last year, did not claim responsibility for the attack, although it said it had struck several Israeli positions that day.

Hezbollah says its actions against Israeli forces are a show of support for the Palestinians in Gaza and its ally, the militant group Hamas.
