A video recorded by a Palestinian activist on the burning remains of an Israeli armored personnel carrier on Baghdad Street in the Shujaiya neighborhood went viral on social media on Tuesday (9/7/2024).
Residents of the neighborhood said the armored vehicle was destroyed several days ago after Palestinian fighters targeted it with anti-tank missiles.
Since June 28, Shujaiya has witnessed brutal Israeli military operations.
The Israeli army announced that they had begun a ground operation in the neighborhood, the third since the genocide began on 7 October.
“In the past few hours, some Palestinians managed to enter the outskirts of the neighborhood, where Israeli military vehicles withdrew, and rescued some victims from the streets and destroyed houses,” an eyewitness told Anadolu.
According to witnesses, there has been heavy fighting in the Shujaiya neighborhood between anti-Palestinian factions and the Israeli army for the past few days.
Ignoring a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire, Israel has faced international criticism amid its continued brutal attacks on Gaza since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack.
Israel killed more than 38,200 Palestinians, most of them women and children, and injured nearly 88,000 others, according to local health authorities.
Nine months into Israel’s war, much of Gaza has been devastated by severe barriers to food, clean water and medicine.
Israel has been accused of genocide by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), whose latest ruling ordered it to immediately stop its military operations in the southern city of Rafah.
Rafah was where over a million Palestinians sought refuge from the war before Israel attacked it on May 6.
