Most of the increase (62%) resulted from natural multiplication,3 and the rest (38%) – from the balance of international migration.4 During the year, about 178 thousand babies and about 73 thousand immigrants were added to the population (compared to about 25 thousand immigrants last year). About 52 thousand deceased and about 4 thousand Israelis who stayed abroad for more than a year were subtracted from the population.

During 2022, approximately 73 thousand immigrants arrived in Israel, a threefold increase compared to 2021. This increase can be attributed to the crisis between Russia and Ukraine starting at the end of February 2022 when the fighting between them began. The main countries from which the immigrants came this year were: Russia (58.1%), Ukraine (21.3%), the USA (4.1%) and France (3.2%).

What are the sources of population growth? In the Jewish sector, 73% of the increase was due to natural multiplication, while in the Arab population – 92%, and in the other population the main increase was the result of immigration – almost 100%.
