The US-based Human Rights Watch has accused Israel of using starvation as a ‘weapon of war’ on the Palestinian people in Gaza. They alleged that Israel is denying water, food, and fuel, as well as wiping out agriculture. The Israeli Foreign Ministry, however, countered these claims by stating that Human Rights Watch has always been an anti-Israel organization and criticized those who remained silent during the massacre by Hamas on October 7. Israel claims that Hamas is smuggling fuel and food to civilians in Gaza through their tunnels, leading to famine.
In response to the allegations, Israeli forces launched attacks all over Gaza, resulting in casualties. The Gaza Health Ministry reported that 18,787 Palestinians have been killed, while 126 soldiers have died in the Hamas counterattack against the Israeli ground war. The Israeli army also faced backlash after killing three hostages who were attempting to escape by waving a white flag.
CIA Director Bill Burns is set to meet with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani and the head of Israel’s Mossad to negotiate a new deal on the release of hostages and a ceasefire. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has also arrived in Tel Aviv to put pressure on Israel and advance the position that the war should be focused solely on Hamas’ tunnel networks.
The situation has escalated further as Israeli forces raided Qamar Adwan Hospital in Gaza, claiming to have detained suspected Hamas members. Additionally, the Italian Foreign Minister has protested the shooting of two women by Israeli forces at a Christian church in Gaza City. The US has also accused the Houthis of carrying out an attack on a US ship off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea.
In a separate development, Israel has appointed senior diplomat Reuven Azhar as its ambassador to India, as well as in charge of Sri Lanka and Bhutan, replacing Nor Gilon.
