Israel’s Parliament Approves Law That Weakens Judiciary; Netanyahu calls reform “democratic”

Israel’s parliament on Monday approved a clause that restricts the powers of the Supreme Court to overturn decisions of the government or the legislature. Despite intense protests outside the building against the judicial reform vote, the 65 deputies of the coalition between the right, religious orthodox and extreme right approved the main reform proposal. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the decision, which he described as a “necessary democratic step”.
