Israel conquered the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip during the Six-Day War in 1967. It withdrew from the Gaza Strip in 2005, but continues to control its land, sea and air borders. East Jerusalem has been annexed by Israel, and the West Bank is called disputed territory, the future of which must be negotiated. At the same time, Israel is settling its citizens in East Jerusalem and the West Bank to strengthen its control over these areas.

The international community considers all three territories occupied. The Palestinians want them all for their independent state.

The ICJ decision is not binding, but in the context of the war in the Gaza Strip, it may further increase the pressure on Israel. Here, Israel is trying to defeat the terrorist movement Hamas after an unprecedented attack against it in early October. This war has terrible consequences for civilians.

The UN General Assembly tasked the court with determining the legal consequences of Israel’s nearly 60-year occupation policy. This was done long before the Gaza war.
