An official involved in the negotiations for the release of the abductees criticized the conduct of the political echelon: “We have to go out of our way to get them out of hell. We are running out of them. This is on the political echelon’s court – not Hamas’s.”
Members of the negotiating team asked for a broader mandate to continue the talks – and were refused. Some of them asked the members of the cabinet to consider more significant compromises on the significant point that is in dispute between Israel and Hamas – the passage of Gazans to the northern Gaza Strip, but this proposal did not have a majority. According to sources involved in the matter, not only Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Galant opposed it, but also senior members of the defense establishment. No other courses of action were formulated in Israel, and last night’s cabinet discussion ended without decisions.
