(ANSA) – ROME, 01 AUG – Fifteen new human cases of West Nile have been reported in the period 25-31 July 2024. This is indicated by the latest bulletin from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS). Since the beginning of May 2024, 28 confirmed cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) infection in humans have been reported in Italy (13 in the previous bulletin); of these 16 have manifested themselves in the neuro-invasive form (1 Lombardy, 4 Veneto, 1 Friuli-Venezia Giulia, 7 Emilia-Romagna, 2 Puglia, 1 case imported from the United States), 7 asymptomatic cases identified in blood donors (7 Emilia-Romagna), 4 cases of fever (1 Veneto, 1 Friuli-Venezia Giulia, 1 case imported from Oman and 1 from Morocco) and 1 asymptomatic case (Emilia-Romagna). Among the confirmed cases, 2 deaths were reported (1 Veneto, 1 Friuli-Venezia Giulia).
The first autochthonous human case of Wnv infection of the season was reported from Emilia-Romagna on June 26 in the province of Modena. No cases of Usutu virus were reported during the same period. (ANSA).
