Iss, 171 cases and 6 deaths since May for West Nile virus – Health and Wellbeing

(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 22 – With seventy-two new cases of West Nile Virus reported in the period 15-21 August, the total number of cases confirmed in Italy since the beginning of surveillance in May 2024 has risen to 171. Deaths have also increased, from 4 to 6. This is highlighted in the bulletin of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) for integrated surveillance of West Nile and Usutu virus of August 22.
Of the total cases, 101 were in the neuroinvasive form (2 Piedmont, 1 Lombardy, 23 Veneto, 5 Friuli-Venezia Giulia, 63 Emilia Romagna, 1 Campania, 2 Puglia, 1 Calabria, 1 case imported from the United States and 2 from Albania), 21 were asymptomatic cases identified in blood donors (1 Piedmont, 5 Lombardy, 1 Veneto, 2 Friuli-Venezia Giulia, 11 Emilia-Romagna, 1 Campania), 49 cases of fever (1 Piedmont, 1 Lombardy, 33 Veneto, 12 Emilia-Romagna, 1 case imported from Oman and 1 from Morocco). Of the confirmed cases, 6 deaths were reported (1 Piedmont, 2 Veneto, 1 Friuli-Venezia Giulia, 2 Emilia-Romagna).
The bulletin shows that the number of Provinces with demonstrated circulation of West Nile Virus in vectors/animals/humans belonging to 11 Regions has risen to 35 (there were 33 in the previous survey).
