István Berczelly, former star of the Hungarian State Opera House, has died

The baritone spent most of the next thirty years of his life between the walls of Andrássy út. However, after his retirement in 2000, he returned to the stage as a guest for another sixteen years.

During his long and Hungary-focused career, he initially wrote lyrical and Verdi he sang baritone roles, and then, as his voice began to change, as András Faragó’s heir, he gradually took over the bass-baritone role, and sometimes even the deep bass role, and became one of the most prominent of his generation Wagner– interprets.

István Berczelly received numerous awards during his career: in addition to the already mentioned awards, he received the Bartók–Pásztory Award, the Knight’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit, the Mihály Székely and Oláh Gusztáv memorial plaques, the György Melis Award, and the Mária Sudlik Memorial Award.

The Hungarian State Opera considers the deceased artist to be its own dead, and arrangements for his funeral will be made later.
