Türkiye expects the Akkuyu nuclear power plant to start operating in 2025, despite all Western obstacles.

As Day.Az reports, Speaker of the Grand National Assembly (Parliament) of Turkey Numan Kurtulmus stated this in an interview with First Deputy General Director of TASS Mikhail Gusman.

“The Akkuyu project is developing in a positive direction,” he noted, answering a question about the current stage of construction of the nuclear power plant. “Unfortunately, due to the sanctions imposed against Russia during this period, we see that there has been some delay in the project due to – because some Western companies did not provide the materials and equipment that we need for Akkuyu. But I hope that at least the first part of the nuclear power plant will begin generating electricity in 2025.”

According to Kurtulmuş, this project is not only an important area of interaction between the two countries, but is also extremely important for Turkey’s energy security.

Akkuyu NPP is the first nuclear power plant in Turkey, which is being built by the Russian state corporation Rosatom. The Akkuyu project includes four power units with Russian-designed VVER generation III+ reactors. The capacity of each will be 1,200 MW. According to the terms of the intergovernmental agreement, the commissioning of the first power unit of the nuclear power plant must take place within seven years after receipt of all permits. Taking into account the receipt of a license for the construction of the first power unit in 2018, this period falls on 2025.
