The presidency of the European Council could temporarily pass to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán following the resignation of the body’s head, Charles Michel, as the country takes over the presidency of the European Council from July to December 2024.

Previously, it was reported that the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, may leave his post several months ahead of schedule. The politician intends to take part in the elections to the European Parliament, which will be held on June 6-9, as a representative of the Reform Movement party he heads. If she enters the European Parliament, Michel plans to resign from the post of head of the European Council, since holding both posts at the same time is prohibited by EU law.
