The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States warned, on Wednesday, of counterfeit “Botox” injections, which have caused a number of people to be hospitalized over the past few days, according to the American “NBC News” network.

Patients reported symptoms similar to food poisoning, such as blurred vision, facial drooping, fatigue, shortness of breath, and hoarseness.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that it is “aware of some illnesses similar to food poisoning as a result of injections of botulinum toxin, known as Botox, which are injected in non-medical centers.”

Botox injections use Clostridium botulinum, a neurotoxic substance that relaxes the facial muscles that cause wrinkles.

Botox is generally considered safe, but getting too much of it in unapproved places can be harmful, according to the CDC.

Allam and his fellow dermatologists conducted a study in which they monitored the improvement in the faces of a small group of middle-aged women after they performed face-lifting exercises for half an hour a day for eight weeks, and then they practiced the exercises day after day for another 12 weeks.

Adam Friedman, a dermatologist, professor and head of the Department of Dermatology at George Washington University in the United States, warned that “it is difficult to guarantee the quality of products that do not have reliable sources.”

“People are putting themselves at great risk when using these counterfeit products,” he added. Health departments in Illinois and Tennessee reported cases possibly linked to “fake Botox,” with two people in each state hospitalized.

Warnings have increased recently about medical procedures in unaccredited health centers, threatening patient safety, according to NBC News.

Illinois public health authorities said patients “reported symptoms similar to food poisoning after being injected with either Botox or possibly an adulterated version of the product.”
