/ Authorities in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan ordered their officials on Sunday not to take pictures or videos of “living creatures.”

The state’s Interior Ministry sent a message to civilian and military officials, “refraining from taking pictures of living creatures in official and unofficial gatherings, because their harm is greater than their benefit.”

“On the other hand, covering the activities of officials in text or audio is permitted,” the ministry was quoted as saying by Agence France-Presse.

A spokesman for the Kandahar governor confirmed to AFP the “authenticity of the message,” but it was not immediately clear to what extent the order would be implemented and how it would be enforced.

The Taliban banned television and images of living beings during its first rule between 1996 and 2001.
