UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Zero Emissions Ed Miliband will take part in the COP29 climate summit in Baku.

This was reported by Day.Az with reference to The Guardian.

“Ed Miliband will travel to Azerbaijan in November to attend the COP29 climate summit. He will lead the UK delegation to the key international climate talks and meet with political leaders from around the world,” the publication notes.

The publication notes that senior climate diplomacy figures welcomed the move and said the UK’s leadership “will be crucial to what is expected to be a challenging and tense UN climate summit later this year.”

According to the publication, the main item on the summit’s agenda will be climate finance for developing countries to help them reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cope with the effects of extreme weather conditions.

“Ed Miliband has a proven track record at the COP and in all aspects of these multilateral negotiations. He has been vigilant through the ups and downs of 14 years and he will not be starting from scratch,” said Christiana Figueres, former executive secretary of the UN Climate Change Commission, who chairs the Paris Agreement and is now a founding partner of the think tank Global Optimism.

Miliband served as UK Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change from 2008 to 2010. He was appointed Secretary of State for Energy Security and Zero Emissions on 5 July 2024.
