To reach this conclusion, researchers from Monash University (Australia) analyzed the United Kingdom Biobank – from 2006 onwards. large databases of 500,000 participants – health records of individuals – are managed. Biobank collects data from medical research, biomarker analysis and gene sequencing. It also includes information on participants’ environmental conditions and lifestyle, including activity levels.
For this particular study, the research team analyzed the health records of 408,354 biobank participants and found that 23,814 people suffered from constipation. They then dug into these records and found that those who experienced constipation were more than twice as likely to experience heart health-related complications, such as heart attack, stroke or hospitalization for heart failure.
Even more alarming, the study found that people with constipation who also had high blood pressure had a 34 percent increased risk of heart disease. higher than those who only had elevated blood pressure.
“The implications of this study are very important,” says lead study author Francine Marques from Monash’s School of Biological Sciences. – As constipation bothers approximately 14% of people. in the world’s population, especially older people and women, these results suggest that gut conditions may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in a significant proportion of the population.”
The researchers stress that more research is needed to investigate the link they uncovered and to identify the biological mechanisms involved. One of the theories they’re working with is that constipated individuals may have a condition called leaky gut syndrome, where the gut becomes more permeable, allowing toxins and bacteria to enter the bloodstream.
Regardless of the cause, researchers say constipation should be considered an important risk factor for heart health, according to New Atlas.
