Ricardo Mewes argued that “there are people who clearly will not be able to bear the cost of the increase. But there are other people who can.”

Ricardo Mewes, President of the Confederation of Production and Commerce (CPC) joined the discussion about the rise in electricity bills and He was against the fact that the electricity subsidy that the Government will provide would benefit a large part of the population.

Along these lines, the business leader highlighted the position of President Gabriel Boric and the Minister of Energy, Diego Pardow, regarding catching up after the unfreezing of electricity rates and that bills “must be paid”.

The president of the CPC rejected the idea that one of the proposals of the technical committee that seeks to reach an agreement with La Moneda on this matter is to expand the universe of beneficiaries of the electricity subsidy.

“I think the subsidy should go to the most vulnerable people, not to the 10 million people that some parliamentarians were proposing,” Mewes said at a seminar held in the commune of Frutillar.

Ricardo Mewes argued that “There are people who obviously won’t be able to afford the cost of the increase. But there are others who can afford it.”

In this regard, he stated that “beyond criticism, We must be realistic and approach payment accordingly, as each person assumes their obligations.”

Mewes further reinforced his position, stating that the actions taken by the Executive to deal with the rise in electricity bills “are going in the right direction, they are the right signals, because debts must be paid.”

“The president has been very clear that the bills must be paid. And if they were not paid before for whatever reasons, well, I think that today it is important that we are aware that these bills must be paid. There are companies that have invested. It is important that they have the peace of mind that the bill will be paid,” he sentenced.
