The Portuguese striker Gonçalo Guedes, a former Valencia player, will once again be loaned out by English Wolverhampton to Benfica, the club where he was formed and to which he returned last season, the Portuguese champions announced on Tuesday.
Guedes, 26, returned to Benfica last January and had good performances with the “eagles”, but injuries have kept him from several matches. He is currently recovering from a knee injury.
In a press conference on the 18th, the Benfica coach, the German Roger Schmidt, assured that he wanted to count on the attacker again, whom he described as “a first level player”.
Gonçalo Guedes “was a very important player for us and he had bad luck with injuries. If we had the chance to get him back this season, it would be good, because he’s a top-level player,” he said.
“We will see if there is an opportunity to have him. He will be welcome, because I like him a lot as a player and as a person,” he concluded.
Schmidt will thus have a new option in attack, a sector diminished with the departure of Gonçalo Ramos to PSG, and a possible partner for the Brazilian Arthur Ramos, signed this window from Italian Fiorentina.
Gonçalo Guedes joined Benfica’s academy in 2006 and rose through the ranks until he made his debut with the first team.
His record with the Lisbon club includes four League titles, one Cup and one Portuguese Super Cup, as well as two League Cups.
From Lisbon he went to Paris, to PSG, where he only played 13 games, for which he was transferred to Valencia, who decided to acquire him permanently.
His time at Mestalla (2017 to 2022) was one of the best of his career, crowned with the conquest of the Copa del Rey in 2019, and last season he signed for Wolverhampton, but lost prominence after the arrival of coach Julen Lopetegui.
