They were already used during the ongoing war, but only in the Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine. Now the Ukrainians used them during the offensive in the Kursk region.
The use of “GBU-39” in the Kursk region was confirmed by the Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force Mykola Oleshchiukas.
Videos of the Ukrainian GBU-39 attack on Russian positions also appeared on social networks.
“This is what an air attack by the Air Force using GBU-39 bombs against [rusų] platoon headquarters in the Kursk region”, said Mykola Oleščiukas.
The GBU-39 is a US precision guided bomb. In addition to accuracy, the main advantage of the GBU-39 is stealth, which makes it difficult to counter a mass strike with such a weapon using anti-aircraft missiles.
The bomb has wings that can be folded in flight, which significantly increases the impact distance. Its weight is quite low: only 130 kg, diameter – about 190 mm, length – about 1.8 m.
The warhead weighs 93 kilograms and contains 16 kilograms of explosive material. Launched at a sufficient altitude, the SDB can independently fly a distance of up to 110 km.
