The attacker is 40-year-old Joel Cauchi. A man killed five women and a man with a knife. Several other people, including a baby, were injured. Authorities said the attack was likely related to Cauchi’s mental health.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb, when asked if she believed the gunman was specifically targeting women, said that would be the focus of the investigation, but it was too early to say for sure. However, she added that she would not call the attack a “terrorist act” and reiterated that, according to the police, “there were no ideological motives”.
Mr Cauchi was previously known to police but had never been arrested or charged in his home state of Queensland.
In a statement released by Queensland Police, his family described his actions as horrific and said he had had mental health issues since he was a teenager.
“We are absolutely devastated by the traumatic events that took place in Sydney yesterday. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims and those still undergoing treatment. Joel’s actions were truly horrific and we are still trying to understand what happened,” said the attacker’s relatives.
They added that they are in contact with police and have “no complaints” against the officer who shot Mr Cauchi.
“She was just doing her job to protect others and we hope she doesn’t blame herself.”
A knife-wielding assailant killed six people in a busy Sydney shopping center on Saturday before being shot dead, Australian police said.
