After the 81-year-old US President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race for the White House, Harris has become the unequivocal favorite to receive the Democratic nomination.
Scholz told reporters at the annual summer press conference in Berlin: “I think it’s quite possible that Kamala Harris will win the election, but it will be decided by the American voters.”
Harris is “a competent and experienced politician who knows exactly what she’s doing,” Scholz said.
The chancellor said he had “conversations with Harris in which she authentically presented her views” rather than simply “saying something prepared.”
Harris has “clear ideas about her country’s role in the world and the challenges we face,” Scholz added.
Washington’s allies in Europe are closely watching the US presidential election, especially because of the possibility of a victory for the belligerent and often isolationist Republican Donald Trump.
“What is happening there is extremely important for all countries in the world and, of course, especially for the closest allies of the United States in Germany and Europe,” Scholz said.
The chancellor made it clear that the relationship “cannot depend on who is president” and said his role was to work with whatever administration was elected.
