Language teacher Mikel Mendizabal has coordinated a book that analyzes the current situation of the Basque language. ‘Basque now. The essay ‘Aiming efficiency’ brought together four writers: Xabier Amuriza, Iñigo Lamarca and two other linguists, Haitao Liu and Jesus Rubio. As the author stated in the presentation of the book, “each writer and linguist has his own perspective, but they have something in common, that they see the need to develop a simple and effective Basque”.

Mendizabal has started from the ideas of the Estonian linguist Juan Valter Tauli in this book, “but from an unusual perspective”, he explained. “According to Tauli, the importance of language efficiency has not been highlighted enough. And it is not true that all languages have achieved the same communicative competence in all their aspects: syntax, morphology, vocabulary, phonology and so on. In other words, languages have obvious limits, although these limits can be overcome, because the speakers, by themselves, have a natural tendency to develop a simple and effective language.’ On the other hand, also in Tauli’s opinion, the intervention of the institutions can be convenient with regard to the corpus, if it is considered that the language has limits in some aspects. “The goal would not be fairness, but ease and communicative ability,” he said.

Although the writers who took part in the book shared their personal ideas, they proclaimed similar proposals, for example, the need to simplify verbs and develop a more efficient syntax, since these two conditions are mandatory to be able to obtain a competent language. “Basque has no future if we don’t simplify the verbs”, said Amuriza.

In Mendizabal’s opinion, “things are not going well in the Basque integration process, this is a reality. We have to look at what we are failing from different perspectives.” According to him, too much importance has been given to grammatical correctness, which “has made the situation suffocating”. For this reason, he declared that “self-criticism is healthy and necessary”.
