News: Hugo Adolfo Karam Released, Accused of Torturing Journalist
After the release of Hugo Adolfo Karam, accused of allegedly torturing journalist Lydia Cacho, he responded by stating that it is not safe for him to return to his country. Through her X account, Cacho issued a brief statement regarding Karam’s release, mentioning his former position as director of the Judicial Police of the Office of the Attorney General of the State of Puebla.
Cacho accused Karam of being complicit in the torture she endured, but added that given his ownership of a security company, a return to Mexico seems unlikely.
“Karam – an accomplice to my torture – is the owner of ERI, a security company with weapons permits and special guards. We have been denouncing him for years. Don’t ask me why it is not safe to return to my country.” – Lydia Cacho
Karam was released from prison on the night of August 6th after his defense filed an appeal for the accused to continue the process in freedom. He met with his wife and legal representatives upon leaving.
In 2005, Cacho accused Karam of participating in the torture she endured due to the publication of her book “The Demons of Eden,” which exposed a network of pedophilia in Mexico. The Office of the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) arrested Hugo Adolfo Karam in July 2023 for allegedly being involved in the crime of torture against the journalist.
