This is provided for by the draft of the Cabinet of Ministers order prepared by the Ministry of Education and Science (MES) and submitted for approval. It is planned that the money will be allocated from the state budget program “Funds for unforeseen cases”.
The LHF has submitted a financial request to the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM), in which it is stated that according to the decision of the Ministry on February 6, the LHF was allocated state budget funds in the amount of 303,391 euros for the preparation of all hockey teams and participation in the highest level competitions.
The 2024 audited expenses of the LHF youth, junior and Latvian men’s and women’s national hockey teams are estimated at 1,767,223 euros. The difference between the state budget funds requested by the LHF and allocated by the Ministry of Interior for the year 2024 for the financial provision of national hockey teams, preparing for and participating in the highest level competitions, is significant, the federation states.
In the opinion of the Ministry of the Interior, the preparation process of the Latvian men’s national hockey team and participation in the qualification tournament of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games is considered to be an event of special national importance, therefore the allocation of funds for the mentioned purpose from “Funds for unforeseen cases” is in accordance with the legal regulation.
Also, the Ministry of the Interior states that the LHF is a nationally important sports organization, which ensures that it, as a recognized sports federation, fulfills the tasks set out in the Sports Law.
It has already been reported that five goalkeepers, 11 defenders and 18 forwards are included in the training camp list of the Latvian national team for the Olympic qualification tournament. Harijs Vītoliņš will name the team for the qualification tournament after two test matches “Arena Rīga”.
