It is entirely possible to increase freight traffic along the Middle Corridor to 11 million tons by 2030.
As reported on Saturday by Day.Az with reference to Trend, this was stated today by the Chairman of the Council of Elders of the Organization of Turkic States Binali Yildirim during an informal summit of the Organization of Turkic States (OTG) in the city of Shusha.
“We have undertaken a great deal of work to implement the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway. The construction of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars today means the completion of the broken link of the Middle Corridor. Although the Middle Corridor is now used more efficiently, today it has reached only one-third of its required capacity. It is quite possible to increase freight traffic on this route to 11 million tons by 2030. There is some work to do, there are some steps,” Yildirim said.
According to him, it is extremely wrong to view infrastructure as commerce.
“Infrastructure and transport are an indispensable tool for developing trade. In this regard, our ultimate goal should be to liberalize everything along this route, as in the European Union. The ultimate goal of the Organization of Turkic States should be to charge for roads, for waiting periods, and eliminate the unpredictability of tariffs here, as well as avoid problems with quotas. In this way, the Middle Corridor, which is the main route of trade from West to East, will have the employment it deserves and the place it deserves,” Yildirim said.
