Ensenada, BC – Given the recurring problems in the supply, distribution, treatment and final destination of water in the city, it is urgent that the investments that have been announced during the last months by the State Government, said the president of the National Chamber of the Processing Industry Ensenada delegation, Ragnar Gutiérrez Abarca.

The leader recognized the interest of the authorities in the problem, but that has not been enough to avoid unscheduled or announced “outages” in different parts of the city, either due to lack of water or urgent repairs caused by the obsolescence of distribution networks.

Nor have they been able to control sewage spills due to broken pipes such as those that have been generated in the treatment plant of the “El Gallo” stream whose operation is maintained with improvised repairs and at constant risk of collapsing because it has not been fully rehabilitated as required by the expiration of the facilities.

El Naranjo Plant

Gutiérrez Abarca also referred to the incident that occurred on October 23 when the breakup of a 30 centimeter collector in diameter caused a flood of stinking wastewater that stopped vehicle traffic and put the health of the residents of Prolongación Zertuche and Ébanos streets in the south of the city at risk.

The diversion of sewage from the El Naranjo Plant to the outskirts of San Carlos towards Maneadero has been no less problematic, where the population has protested not only because of the emanation of nauseating odors, but also because of the fear that the situation becomes a major health problem, added the leader of the industrialists.

What is happening at that site, he warned, could severely damage the surrounding agricultural area and even, if the lack of capacity for the treatment plant, to affect the nearby industrial area, either directly or through emanations.

Added to the above, he said, is the anomalous situation of the El Sauzal Treatment Plant, which is also in a critical situation due to the lack of sufficient maintenance to ensure its proper functioning.

Gutiérrez Abarca recalled that the government has announced that a substantial part of the unidentified credit as a “green bond” for 3 billion pesos, will be assigned to solve part of the problem of which it is known that 400 million would be allocated to the rehabilitation of the El Naranjo Treatment Plant and another 60 to El Sauzal, but it is not clear when the investments will be made.
