The German record champions struggled to win their opening match in a thrilling match in Wolfsburg. After the match, two players had clear words to say about their performance against the Lower Saxony team.
A 1-0 lead was temporarily lost but ultimately won: The first Bundesliga game of 2024/25 did not always go as hoped for FC Bayern. The Munich team’s leading players were also critical of their team’s performance in the 3-2 victory in Wolfsburg on Sunday afternoon.
“The first half wasn’t all that bad, we didn’t really let anything in, had two or three very good opportunities and took the lead,” said Joshua Kimmich after the game on DAZN. But: “We came out of the half extremely poorly, made a lot of build-up errors, then got a penalty against us and then made a second mistake to concede.”
Striker Serge Gnabry, who scored the 3-2 winner in the 82nd minute, also agreed: The 1-1 draw for Lower Saxony had had an effect: “That knocked us off our feet, then we conceded the 1-2, which made it even more difficult. At the end of the day, however, we were rewarded and won 3-2.” Gnabry’s conclusion: “A very exhausting Sunday afternoon.”
Kimmich further emphasised that after half-time “the game was completely lost due to many mistakes. Then it is difficult to control the game.” The pitch conditions also played a role. Although the grass in the Wolfsburg stadium was “in excellent condition, it was very, very dry. As a result, you could see that the game had stalled a bit for both teams. It was difficult to play quickly and directly.”
After falling behind, Bayern “reacted well,” said Kimmich. “The mentality was right.”
