Residents of the 78th apartment building on Panerių Street told “Temporary Capital” that they find mountains of garbage near the garbage containers of the house every morning. It is unclear who leaves them, as the violations are committed at night.

Representatives of the Kauno švara company stated that containers are often filmed, and violators are recorded even in the dark.

Does a bad job at night

Greta, from Vilijampoli, could not hold her anger – the woman was tired of constantly seeing the landfill right next to the door of her house. Every day she finds all kinds of waste here: toilets, cabinets, doors, boards, apparently left after someone dismantled the floor.

“Every morning I go for a walk and after the night I find large objects left by the garbage containers. This angers me, because there is a large waste reception area nearby, on the Raudondvaris road. Is it so difficult to take your waste there?” the woman wondered.

Vilijampolietė said that garbage collectors bring waste at night.

“It looks very messy, but you want to live in a nice neighborhood. If I saw who was doing this, I would immediately start filming, I would give the video to the police,” said Greta.

Video cameras are required

Residents of the 78th apartment building on Panerių Street were seconded by their neighbor Gediminas.

“This is how people pollute nature. If someone brings liquids that cannot be thrown here, they spill near our containers and we see it every time we go somewhere,” the man complained.

Modest also lives in the mentioned apartment building. He is convinced that it is necessary to install video surveillance cameras near the containers. And it should have been done a long time ago.

“I understood that there would be no place to put the old sofa, but now there are reception areas for bulky waste, you don’t have to pay money for things left there. You took it away and threw it away – it’s more fun for you and Lithuania is cleaner. Litterers should be punished,” Modest complained.

Garbage is brought from further away

The press representative of Kauno švara company Kristina Parachomikienė emphasized that not only Vilijampolė apartment yards are turned into landfills.

“This behavior is not only on Panerių Street, but also in many other places. A lot of such cases are recorded in the residential areas of Šilainiai, Dainava. There are such places in every district. On March 1, we cleaned 33 such or similar landfills,” said K. Parachomikienė.

It happens that employees of “Kaunas švaros” collect bulky waste from one container, and by the time they go to another place, new waste is loaded again from the first container.

Pieces of furniture, worn-out plumbing fixtures, jars of jam are left near the containers.

“Frequently, garbage pickers do not live in the apartment buildings near which they leave garbage,” added K. Parachomikienė.

The number of cameras in the city is increasing

“Kaunos švara” installs video surveillance cameras at garbage containers free of charge. There are about 150 of them in Kaunas. About 30 are planned to be installed in the near future.

“The cameras also work in the dark. There are also several hundred other surveillance cameras in the city,” said the representative of “Kaunas švara”.

If residents want cameras to be installed near their containers, they can write a request to “Kaunas Švarai” by e-mail. Cameras are installed at the containers when the queue comes.

He caught three this year

“It is forbidden to throw municipal waste in the streets, squares, other public places, or to leave any waste near the containers. In 2023, the Public Order Department of the Kaunas Municipality received 19 complaints about garbage left in the wrong place. Administrative responsibility was applied to 19 persons.

In 2024, three complaints were received, administrative responsibility was applied to three persons. Litterers can be warned or fined between 20 and 140 euros. In case of a repeated violation, a fine from 140 to 600 euros is imposed,” said Gintaras Gatulis, head of the Public Order Department of the Kaunas Municipality.
