Italian Court Sentences Father and Uncle to Life Imprisonment For Murder of Pakistani Girl

Rome: An Italian court has sentenced the father of a Pakistani girl, Zaman Abbas, to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his daughter. Zaman, 18, was killed in 2021 after her family did not agree to an arranged marriage. The court had previously sentenced the girl’s uncle to life imprisonment in the case, and the girl’s mother is still absconding.

Zaman Abbas went missing from her home in Novellara, near Bologna, in May 2021. During the subsequent investigation, it was revealed that Zaman’s parents wanted to marry her off to a relative in Pakistan against her wishes. Zaman was also involved in a romantic relationship with another youth, which her family did not accept. She had planned to start a new life with her boyfriend in April 2021, which led to her disappearance.

A year after her disappearance, the police found Zaman’s dead body at a farmhouse with her neck broken. Footage of the girl’s father, uncle, and relatives leaving the house with a bucket and earthenware led to their arrest and subsequent confession of the murder.

According to the charge sheet, Zaman’s parents decided to kill her after she refused the arranged marriage and planned to leave with her boyfriend. Her uncle was called in to strangle her to death, and with the help of relatives, her body was then buried at a deserted farm.

After the incident, the accused fled the country, but the police managed to arrest Zaman’s father, Shabbar Abbas, in Pakistan. He was extradited to Italy in August 2023. The girl’s uncle, Danish Hassan, was arrested in France and had been sentenced to life imprisonment earlier. However, the girl’s mother, Nazia Shaheen, is still on the run.

The Italian court acquitted two relatives of the girl who were also accused in the case.

The brutal murder of Zaman Abbas has shocked the community and has shed light on the issue of honor killings and forced marriages. The verdict of the Italian court sends a strong message against such heinous crimes.
