Legislative elections in Italy: the extreme right favorite

The figures of the Italian extreme right Matteo Salvini, Silvio Berlusconi and Giorgia Meloni, during a meeting on September 22, in Rome.

The Italians went to the polls on Sunday September 25 to elect their Parliament, where, unless surprised, the far right should enter in force and propose the Prime Minister who will succeed Mario Draghi. The results will be known overnight. At only 45, Giorgia Meloni, leader of the post-fascist Fratelli d’Italia party, credited with nearly a quarter of the votes in the latest polls, is the favorite to lead a coalition government in which the extreme right would largely dominate the classical right.

Whichever government emerges from the elections, its path already appears to be strewn with pitfalls. He will have to manage the crisis caused by soaring prices, while Italy is crumbling under a debt representing 150% of gross domestic product, the highest ratio in the euro zone behind Greece.

The government unveils measures of the Social Security financing bill

While the Social Security financing bill will be made public at the beginning of the week, the government unveiled, this weekend, a few measures which will be submitted to Parliament. The Minister for Action and Public Accounts, Gabriel Attal, announced in particular that one of the measures would consist of decompensating work stoppages issued by teleconsultation when these are not prescribed by the attending physician.

The Social Security budget for 2023 will also include a measure to extend the studies of future general practitioners by one year, encouraged to complete their course in medical deserts.

According to the draft Social Security financing bill, the Social Security deficit will be reduced significantly in 2023, to 6.8 billion euros, against 17.8 billion expected this year. The draft law consulted by Agence France-Presse on Sunday does not include any pension reform measure, while the executive is considering introducing an increase in the legal age or the contribution period by a amendment during the debates in Parliament in October.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed amendments providing for up to ten years in prison for soldiers who desert or refuse to fight.
