Italian ENI bets on African gas suppliers

The group claims to be able to market some 400 billion additional cubic meters, or nearly ten years of French consumption.

“For now, we have no gas supply problem,” ensures Mario Draghi. The level of Italian stocks remains among the highest in Europe. Nevertheless, since the first day of the Russian invasion, the government has been actively working to emancipate Italy from Moscow gas, which provides 45% of its needs.

And it relies on the large Italian oil company, ENI, which it now controls only 31%. Even before the outbreak of the conflict, ENI CEO Claudio Descalzi said on February 18: “If the government asks us, we are ready to make our contribution by investing again upstream in Italy.” And announced at the end of February to leave the Blue Stream gas pipeline, which carries Russian gas via the Black Sea and Turkey.
