In 2021, Italy continues to remain among the nations most affected by cybercriminals. In recent months, it has been confirmed as one of the top five nations most affected by malware in the world and in October it adds another record, ranking third as the country most affected by ransomware. The figure emerges from the latest report by Trend Micro Research, the division of Trend Micro specialized in research and development and the fight against cybercrime.

In detail, in October the total number of ransomware intercepted worldwide was 1,297,400. The United States is the country most affected, with 23.4% of attacks, followed by France (7.5%), Italy (5%), Belgium (4.5%) and Brazil (3.8%). When it comes to malware, the United States remains the most attacked, with 34,816,097 attacks, followed by Japan (31,711,116), Australia (6,132,704), Italy (6,097,979) and the United Kingdom (5,610,942) . The sectors most affected by malware in Italy are healthcare (1,072 attacks), public administration (842 attacks), manufacturing (746 attacks), tech (525) and banking (260).

The data are the result of the analysis of the Smart Protection Network, Trend Micro’s global intelligence network that identifies and analyzes threats and constantly updates the online database of cyber incidents, to block attacks in real time thanks to the best technology available on the market. The Smart Protection Network is made up of over 250 million sensors and blocks an average of 65 billion threats per year. As of October 2021, Trend Micro’s Smart Protection Network handled 469 billion queries and stopped 9.3 billion threats, of which approximately 72.4% arrived via e-mail.
