On Sunday, Italian Foreign Minister ‌Antonio Taiani called on the ‍European Union to form a joint army to‍ play a‍ role ⁣in maintaining peace and preventing the outbreak of conflicts in the world.

Taiani said in an ⁤interview with the⁤ Italian newspaper La Stampa that close European cooperation in the military field is a priority for the Forza Italia party that he leads, adding: “If we⁤ want to become ⁢peacekeepers in the world, we need a European army. “This is an essential precondition for us to have an effective European foreign policy.”

The ‍Italian diplomat added: “In ⁢a world ⁣that includes powerful parties such as the United States, China, India, and Russia, and is⁣ rife ‌with crises extending from the Middle East to the ⁢Pacific ‌region, Italian, German, French, or Slovenian citizens can only be protected by an entity that already exists, which is the European Union.”

Tayani pointed out that the 27-nation European Union must facilitate its leadership and have a ⁢single presidency instead of the current structure ‍consisting ‌of a president of the European Council and a president of‍ the⁣ European Commission.

European cooperation in the ⁢military field⁢ has risen to the political agenda since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which⁢ is approaching its second year. However, efforts are more focused on expanding NATO, as Finland, a member of the bloc, joined the alliance last year, while Sweden‍ is awaiting⁢ ratification of its accession.
