Roma. The Italian government has begun to take legal steps to support domestic food production. The Roman Senate has passed a bill to ban the use of laboratory foods in Italy. The bill still needs to be approved by the House of Representatives to go into effect. The law aims to ban the production and sale of synthetic foods. In case of violation of the ban, a fine of between 10 thousand and 60 thousand euros is foreseen, as well as the confiscation of the said goods. Synthetic foods need to be similar in appearance and taste to meat without having to kill animals.

“Ministry of Food Sovereignty” is active

The purpose of this law is to make it clear to consumers that the use of such technologies in food production is undesirable and traditional methods are preferred. Sales permits for artificially grown meats in the USA were issued as recently as June.

In Rome, the right-wing government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni attaches great importance to supporting local food production. For this reason, the name of the Ministry of Agriculture was changed to “Ministry of Food Sovereignty”. The cabinet also supports the inclusion of Italian cuisine on the intangible UNESCO World Heritage List. The application will now be forwarded to UNESCO by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome. The evaluation process is expected to be completed in 2025. (yenivatan.at)
