The Italian Ministry of Defense has approved a decree on the purchase of 24 new Eurofighter Typhoon fighters for the Republic’s Air Force.
As reported by Day.Az with reference to APA, according to the portal Rivista Italiana Difesa, they will presumably gradually replace the aircraft in service.
These are new-generation machines equipped with electronic equipment capable of monitoring and controlling drones. This is a strategically important order, the specialized portal notes, since it not only strengthens the Air Force’s equipment, but also meets the goals of the Global Combat Aviation Program. The aircraft will be serviced at the factories of the Italian military-industrial concern Leonardo, the portal suggested.
As Reuters points out, it is planned to spend €7.5 billion on purchasing these aircraft over 11 years.
Earlier, it was reported that Leonardo and the German concern Rheinmetall had reached an agreement to create a new joint venture (JV) to develop a European industrial and technological approach in the field of defense systems. The agreement envisages the industrial development and subsequent maintenance of a new type of main battle tank. In addition, Italy will acquire new Leopard tanks in the coming years.
