Italy’s future depends on Mario Draghi’s long to-do list

by time news

The prime minister calls for clear support for his reform plans: an overview of the most important tasks for the coming months and key reforms that are now at risk.

Mario Draghi’s speech to the Senate on Wednesday morning, in which he wanted to save his government and risk a fresh start, lasted almost 36 minutes. The prime minister made good use of the time: he formulated a list of tasks that his country must complete in the coming weeks and months in order to remain stable on its feet.

The speech was aimed at the populists in his previous team. But Lega, Forza Italia and the Five Star Movement refused to trust the government that evening – and thus also signaled that they were not prepared to forego costly projects. This will cause violent international reactions: In view of the precarious global situation, new instability in the important euro and NATO state comes at an inopportune time.
