On the 26th, at the plenary session of the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports, and Tourism Committee, there were unusual comments from opposition party members praising Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Yoo In-chon. This is because he gave somewhat different answers than other government officials on various historical issues that are currently causing controversy.

Meanwhile, regarding issues of Japan’s past colonial rule or the UNESCO listing of Japan’s Sado Mine, the government’s position has been that “what’s important now is Japan’s feelings” or criticism that it is a humiliating diplomacy, “This is unfair criticism. We did our best.”

Minister Yoo In-chon responded to this by saying, “It feels somewhat inadequate.”

On that day, Minister Yoo explained, “From the Ministry of Culture’s perspective, we believe that issues that need to be addressed, especially issues related to Korea-Japan relations, must be addressed,” and “(At the Korea-China-Japan Culture Ministers’ Meeting in September) I will speak up and discuss the issue with the Japanese minister once again.”

When Min Hyung-bae, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, asked Minister Yoo, “Was the founding of the Republic of Korea in 1919 or 1948?” Minister Yoo responded, “Isn’t it always written in our Constitution that this government of the Republic of Korea was established by inheriting the spirit of our (1919) Shanghai Provisional Government?”

When Rep. Min said, “But there are situations where you keep not acknowledging it,” Minister Yoo responded, “I acknowledge it. I acknowledge it…”

However, he did not give a clear answer to the request that he should ‘clearly oppose National Foundation Day’ right after. Nevertheless, unlike the New Right, he clearly stated that he succeeded the provisional government.

The opposition party responded with unusual praise. When Rep. Lee Ki-heon said, “It’s a new experience,” Minister Yoo responded, “I’m grateful.”

Yang Moon-seok, a representative of the Democratic Party of Korea and a strong opposition figure, also praised him, saying, “I am glad to meet a minister who recognizes the legitimacy of the Shanghai Provisional Government, considering that we have seen so many unconstitutional ministers and vice ministers.”

Meanwhile, in the case of the New Right, they are emphasizing the founding of the country in 1948 while neglecting it by saying, “It was not founded in 1919.”
