A Chinese woman who gained 20 kg in weight in a year due to work-related stress regained her health after quitting her job, and ‘overwork obesity’ has become a hot topic in China.

According to a recent report by Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (HCMP), Ouyang Wenjing, a 24-year-old woman living in Guangdong Province in southern China, gained weight from 60 kg to 80 kg in just one year due to stress at work.

Wen Jing did not specify his job or occupation, but said his job was “a disaster” for his physical and mental health. He said he often worked overtime, had irregular shifts, and relied on delivery food for all his meals.

Wen Jing, who weighed up to 105kg in middle school, said she lost 45kg over the next four years, but her efforts were ruined by work and she began to gain weight again. Wen Jing eventually quit her job to protect herself. She is currently a diet influencer with 41,000 followers on Chinese social media.

His weight loss experience resonated with many who share their experiences with ‘overwork’. He advised people to eat more vegetables, eat less meat, and try not to let work interrupt their regular meal times. He also suggested exercising to stay healthy.

Dr. Zuo Xiaoxia, a doctor at the nutrition department of the 309th Hospital of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, told Chinese media outlet Health Times that “late dinners, overeating, and lack of sleep are the causes of ‘overwork obesity.'”

According to Chinese labor law, employees cannot work more than 40 hours a week, but many companies often break this rule. The “996” work culture of working six days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. is still widespread.
