Warner Bros. is renewing the franchise for the successful “Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy. In a conversation last Thursday, Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav announced that the heads of the new studios, Mike De Luca and Pam Abdi, brokered a deal to create a series of films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved books. The projects will be developed through the WB New brand. Line Cinema.

The first “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson, grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide. Jackson’s sequel trilogy based on Tolkien’s The Hobbit earned the same profits.

No filmmakers have yet been attached to the project, but in a statement to Variety, Jackson and his main “Lord of the Rings” collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boynes said Warner Bros. and the others “kept us engaged every step of the way.”

“We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for how the franchise is moving forward,” said Jackson, Walsh and Boynes.

It should be noted that De Luca and Abdi left MGM last year to lead Warner Bros. Their departure, following the purchase of MGM by Amazon – the technology giant that owns the television rights to “The Lord of the Rings” and produced one season in 2022.

“We are excited to embark on a new collaborative journey with New Line Cinema and Warner Bros., bringing Tolkien’s incomparable world back to the big screen in new and exciting ways,” said Freemode CEO Lee Gonchard. “We understand how much these works are loved and planned Respect the past, look to the future and adhere to the highest level of quality and production values.”
