1960s house interior design… Korea’s first mixology menu
“Memory of space with the scent of coffee”… Like a wealthy homeowner in the 3rd floor lounge
“Is this home or Starbucks?”
A Starbucks Reserve store has opened in a residential complex in Jangchung-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul, known as the original affluent neighborhood. Starbucks held an open house press invitation event on the 11th, a day before the opening of the Jangchung Lounge R store on the 12th.
Unlike Starbucks stores, which are usually located in the middle of major commercial districts, Jangchung Lounge R is located in the middle of a residential area in Jangchung-dong. In fact, it was designed to fully preserve the sensuous interior of a house built in the 1960s.
Jangchung Lounge R is the 10th special store to be launched in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the Reserve store. Unlike Reserve stores that operate alongside regular Starbucks stores, Jangchung Lounge R is a Reserve-only store like Jeju Songdang Park R and The Bukhan River R. It is also the only Reserve-only store in Seoul.
The space consists of three floors, from the basement floor, which was a warehouse space, to the second floor above ground. When you enter through the basement floor entrance, you will see geometric graphic design works on display, and if you use a QR code, you can enjoy an augmented reality (AR) video of the journey of coffee beans around the world.
The first floor is a ‘bar’ space. In addition to the existing Starbucks reserve menu, you can enjoy a ‘mixology’ cocktail menu at Jangchung Lounge R. There are several mixology stores where you can enjoy cocktails at Starbucks stores around the world, but this is the first store in Korea to operate a mixology menu.
At the event that day, I tried the Bourbon Whiskey Cream Cold Brew and the Citrus Cold Brew Martini. The sweet Bourbon Whiskey Cream flavor and the fragrant citrus flavor were well-balanced with a subtle coffee flavor. It also seemed like a good place to drink cocktails rather than coffee. In addition, you can find a total of 11 cocktail drinks at the Jangchung Lounge R branch.
The third floor is a lounge area. In the space overlooking the outdoor garden, you can enjoy a cup of Starbucks Reserve coffee while looking out at the scenery.
The most striking space was the ‘music room’. The dark brown tone and soft music, as if the wealthy landlord had collected LPs to enjoy his hobby, made the space more suitable for enjoying.
A Starbucks representative who helped with the coffee tasting at the event explained, “Coffee is a food that is remembered by its aroma, and it is a food that takes away memories of a space.” The aroma of the Reserve coffee brought the space to mind.
Hong Seong-wook, Starbucks store development manager, said, “Jangchung Lounge R is a store prepared to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the introduction of Reserve in Korea, and we planned it in the hopes that customers will be able to enjoy Starbucks’ coffee heritage,” adding, “Starbucks will continue to make efforts to introduce stores with various concepts in the future.”
