Often stressed, the Frenchman attributed his performances in Romania to a change in mentality.

The Frenchman Mewen Tomac, already crowned in the 50m backstroke on Wednesday, won the title of European champion in the 100m backstroke in the short course on Friday in Otopeni (Romania). Tomac, 22, won in 49 sec 72 ahead of another Frenchman, Yohann Ndoye-Brouard, second in 49 sec 96. The Italian Lorenzo Mora and the Romanian Andrei Ungur, tied for 3rd, completed the podium (50 sec 04).

Quadruple French champion at the end of October, finalist several times and close to the podium at international level, Tomac confirms his progress after winning two finals at the long course Worlds last summer in Fukuoka. He, who had never won an international medal before this competition, won two titles in two days in Romania. He could add another medal with the 200m backstroke, the heats of which begin on Saturday.

«It’s the training that pays off», he congratulated himself. “Afterwards, I have a lot of things to improve on the 100m, that’s for sure, but I manage to translate into competition what I do in training and that’s what makes me improve.» Often stressed, Tomac attributed his Romanian performance to a change in mentality. “I changed my approach“, he explained. “I do sports for fun, and I don’t care about the rest. I’m looking to have fun, not to swim fast or do well… It’s more “enjoy the good time”».
