BUNIA – Eastern DRC is still bereaved by armed groups. A new attack by the militia of the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODEO) left around forty dead in the province of Ituri.
The tragedy occurred on the morning of this Monday, June 12, 2023, when the site for the displaced persons of Lala located in the chiefdom of Bahema Badjere in the territory of Djugu, was attacked by CODECO. Jean Richard Dhedha Kondo Lenga, head of the said chiefdom, evokes a balance sheet of 41 people killed, 8 injured alongside the burnt shelters. This is still a provisional balance sheet and one that risks becoming heavier.
Regarding the persistence of insecurity in this eastern part of the DRC, local sources indicate that this attack is the third perpetrated by CODECO after the signing of the cessation of hostilities on June 1 in Aru. It was at the end of an intergroup dialogue organized by the provincial authority of Ituri. Its purpose was to restore peace in this province.
