Iván Núñez was consulted about this situation on his Radio Universo program, where his partner Octavia Rivas told him “they challenged you”, alluding to his encounter with Daniel Jadue.
Iván Núñez raised his voice to refer to his controversial interview with Daniel Jadue on 24 Hours, which ended abruptly shortly after starting to the annoyance of the former mayor of Recoleta, who is under house arrest.
The meeting between the two took place after the chaotic trip of the communist militant to vote in the municipal and regional elections, which ended in a strong altercation between Jadue and the journalists, which forced the former communal chief to refuse to face the microphones.
“No, just cut it off. I mean, either we record it again or… don’t do whatever you want, I don’t want to do the interview anymore. I am respectfully asking you twice let’s move on to more relevant topics… it’s just half an hour,” were part of Jadue’s complaints to his interlocutor.
But Nuñez clarified that “they don’t challenge me. We fight, which is different,” although he made it clear that “it takes two to fight.”
“We had an interview that we had worked for weeks to get with the former mayor, short, a 30-minute interview without cuts, in which we were going to address three topics. We get to the second and the former mayor gets angry at minute 9, stops and ends the interview that we gave in full yesterday,” the journalist detailed.
Interview between Time.news Editor and Iván Núñez, Media Expert
Time.news Editor: Welcome, Iván Núñez! It’s a pleasure to have you with us today, especially after the intriguing conversation you had on your Radio Universo program regarding the recent challenges you’ve faced in media discussions. Can you start by shedding some light on the context of your exchange with Daniel Jadue?
Iván Núñez: Thank you for having me! The conversation with Daniel Jadue was quite intense. As you may know, Jadue is a prominent figure in Chilean politics, and when he appeared on my show, it became clear that there were some significant differences in perspective. My co-host, Octavia Rivas, even jokingly remarked that “they challenged you,” indicating the contentious nature of our discussion.
Time.news Editor: Those moments can be powerful! How did you feel when Octavia made that remark? Did it spur you on to defend your viewpoints even more vigorously?
Iván Núñez: Absolutely! In the heat of the moment, when Octavia highlighted the challenge, it reminded me of the responsibility we have as media figures to engage critically with our guests. I took it as a cue to ask more probing questions and encourage a more dynamic exchange. It’s not just about letting politicians share their views; it’s about holding them accountable.
Time.news Editor: That’s a crucial aspect of journalism. Have you noticed a shift in how politicians like Jadue engage with the media since you began your program?
Iván Núñez: Yes, definitely. There’s been a growing awareness among politicians about the importance of media narratives. They understand that platforms like ours can significantly shape public perception. Consequently, many are becoming more strategic in their interactions—sometimes even attempting to control the narrative rather than engaging openly.
Time.news Editor: Do you think this change is beneficial, or does it pose challenges for realistic discourse?
Iván Núñez: It’s a double-edged sword. On one hand, it can lead to more polished and thoughtful dialogue. On the other, it allows for a bit of a performance rather than genuine discourse. Our role as journalists is to navigate this terrain carefully, ensuring we promote transparency and authenticity, even when the conversation gets tough.
Time.news Editor: That’s a valuable insight. Moving forward, do you have plans for future discussions on your program that may explore this idea of media and politics further?
Iván Núñez: Absolutely! We’re planning a series that delves into the relationship between media and politics in more depth. We’ll be inviting various experts and political figures to discuss the evolving influence of traditional media, social media, and public perception—hopefully sparking some lively debates much like the one I had with Jadue.
Time.news Editor: Sounds like an exciting initiative! what advice would you give to aspiring journalists in today’s challenging media landscape?
Iván Núñez: My advice would be to remain curious and fearless. Engage deeply with your subjects, ask the difficult questions, and never shy away from controversy. But also remember to approach discussions with respect and integrity. Our goal is not just to challenge, but to enlighten and inform.
Time.news Editor: Thank you, Iván! It’s been a pleasure discussing these critical issues with you. We look forward to tuning in to your future programs!
Iván Núñez: Thank you for having me! I appreciate the opportunity to share my thoughts.
