IŽA joins the partners of the international R. Sakadolskis Journalism Forum

G. Ališauskaitė-Bagušauskienė, who has been working in the media for 14 years, is a long-time journalist and deputy editor of the news portal Lrytas.lt, and now holds the position of business development manager and teaches journalism classes.

Ugnė Karaliūnaitė, head of the news portal Delfi.lt, also works in the commission. deputy editor, paid content development manager, Raimundas Celencevičius, current affairs editor of news portal 15min.lt, Paulius Paleckis, photojournalist of BNS news agency, Goda Ponomariovaitė, president of VU JŽD and Indrė Kaminckaitė, LRT culture journalist, LRT KLASIKOS program editor.

The Young Journalists Award competition is initiated by the Young Journalists’ Society (JŽD) of Vilnius University (VU) and the initiative group of the Romos Sakadolskis Journalism Forum.

According to IŽA chairperson Lina Bušinskaitė, this year the association joins the partners of the international academic R. Sakadolskis journalism forum in order to contribute to strengthening this initiative.

“For four years, the initiative group of the forum has done a great job – they have already organized three forums voluntarily and free of charge, which have received favorable evaluations in the media community. Therefore, the association, by joining partners this year, aims to contribute to the popularization of this initiative and the strengthening of journalism, encouraging young journalists and professionals in this field for their significant contribution in their daily work, which is not lacking in challenges”, says L. Bušinskaitė.

According to G. Ališauskaitė-Bagušauskienė, the Young Journalists Award competition, which is being organized for the third time, is very important for the media community of the country, because it is a great opportunity to encourage young people to achieve their dreams and goals, entering professional journalism.

“The purpose of this competition is not only to select authors of the best written, video, audio and photographic works and evaluate them. It is much broader, as it aims to encourage young people to be interested in Lithuanian and world current affairs, to raise important questions for society, to develop critical thinking and creativity.

And, of course, to contribute to the formation of young journalists’ practical skills, which are necessary when doing creative work in the editorial offices of our country’s mass media,” says the representative of the news portal Lrytas.lt.

TV journalist Rytis Zemkauskas, a member of the initiative group of the R. Sakadolskis Forum, emphasizes that this year we are entering the fourth international academic forum of R. Sakadolskis Journalism by expanding the circle of partners.

“This year, in addition to Vytautas the Great University and Vilnius University, IŽA and LRT are joining the partners of the forum. Thus, this forum becomes the most important and solid arena for discussions about the state of Lithuanian journalism and media. For us, this is an assessment and responsibility of the successful four years of work of the forum”, says R. Zemkauskas.

He is seconded by Ričardas Pranculis, coordinator of the VU JŽD Prize group.

“We are glad that IŽA contributes to the opportunity to evaluate the efforts of young journalists with cash prizes and to assemble a professional competition committee. The Young Journalists Award can become a strong starting point for a young person’s career in the media,” says R. Pranculis.

This year, participants in the Young Journalists and Journalists Award competition are divided into two age groups: 15-17 years old. and 18-24 years old. Written works were expected from the participants of the first age category who are still in school. Participants of the second category could submit photo series (photo reports, photo stories) and written, audio and video journalistic works. A total of 40 works were received, which the commission will evaluate in the coming days.

The R. Sakadolskis Journalism Forum is an annual event that brings together journalism professionals, researchers and students in a discussion space where the situation of journalism in Lithuania and the world is analyzed.

The forum not only aims to reflect the current reality of journalism, but also to predict its future directions. During the forum, questions are raised about the influence of the media on the formation of public opinion, the responsibility of journalists, ethical principles, the latest technologies that change the specifics of journalists’ work.

The culmination of the forum is the annual R. Sakadolskis journalism awards, which are awarded to journalists and their groups for outstanding work in the fields of fact, opinion, entertainment, investigative and cultural journalism. These awards are not only an appreciation, but also an encouragement to journalists to continue to strive for the highest professional standards.
