There are very few things in life that can’t be improved with the addition of Jack Black.
The world is undeniably a brighter place with Jack Black in it, a truth he’s proven repeatedly—from charming audiences in films like School of Rock and Bernie to channeling his inner Ozzy Osbourne with a spirited rendition of Crazy Train, recorded for Black Sabbath’s Back To The Beginning farewell show, or simply goofing off with Kyle Gass in Tenacious D.
Black is currently on a press tour promoting his new film, Anaconda, alongside Paul Rudd, and the 56-year-old Californian has been characteristically energetic and amusing. Surprisingly, promoting a movie about a giant snake somehow led to Black launching into an enthusiastic, though not entirely flawless, performance of Nickelback’s 2001 hit How You Remind Me during an interview. Many believe this impromptu concert was more entertaining than the film itself.
The joy of Black’s performance lies in his determined effort to recall the song’s title—a track that has amassed over 1.5 billion streams on Spotify—causing him to momentarily lose track when the interviewer turned to Rudd to discuss his 17 appearances as Mike Hannigan on Friends, opposite Lisa Kudrow. Black then interrupted, singing the pre-chorus of How You Remind Me before improvising vocals reminiscent of Chad Kroeger, while Rudd watched with amusement and applauded.
“Took me a while dude,” Black confessed to Rudd. “I went into a coma! You were talking by yourself, looking to me for help, and I was like, I can’t, I’m trying to remember the Nickelback. I’m so glad, it’s such a relief.”
“And, I think, amazingly, I got every lyric right,” he declared, staring directly into the camera and challenging anyone to disagree.
Social media users reacted enthusiastically to the clip.
“I want Jack Black to re-record every piece of music that has ever been made,” one comment read, a sentiment many seemed to share.
