Title: Jacksonville Community Unites in Support of 11-Year-Old Battling Rare Cancer

Article:

ORANGE PARK, Fla. – The Jacksonville community rallied together over the weekend to show their support for an 11-year-old boy named Corey Kerrin, who is bravely fighting a rare form of cancer. Corey was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Giloma, a type of cancer that currently has no known cure.

In an effort to raise funds and awareness for Corey’s battle, a local barbershop on Wells Road organized a heartfelt fundraiser called “Cuts for Corey.” The community came out in full force, including A.D. Capers who expressed, “I’m just here to help out the community and help this young man.”

One attendee, Kiwnia Thomas, explained that the event was organized on behalf of her friend, Corey’s mother, who is a client and a cherished friend. She emphasized the struggles faced by Corey’s family, stating, “She’s a mother of 5. And one of her sons, her oldest son, has cancer, terminal cancer. He’s not doing so good. Praying for the best.”

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Giloma primarily affects children between the ages of 6 to 7, with an estimated 150 to 300 cases diagnosed each year. The tumor on Corey’s brain stem poses significant challenges, as it is unfortunately inoperable. However, targeted chemotherapy has shown some promise in managing the condition, and doctors are hopeful that medications can potentially shrink the tumor.

Sadly, Corey’s doctors have given him only a few months to live. Despite the devastating prognosis, his family is determined to cherish every moment and extend his precious time as much as possible. Speaking about her friend’s situation, Thomas shared, “I just wanna make sure I’m being a blessing for her. I’m just trying to do what I can and make it a little better and take the load off her. I hate seeing my friends in need and don’t want to ask for it.”

The local community hopes that the fundraiser not only provides financial support but also offers some relief and comfort to Corey’s family during this challenging time.

The outpouring of support for Corey and his family serves as a reminder of the unity and compassion that exists within the Jacksonville community. By standing together, they are demonstrating their commitment to helping those in need, especially children fighting against life-threatening diseases.

As Corey continues his battle, his community remains by his side, offering strength, love, and unwavering support. The fundraiser was a testament to the power of collective action, and its effects will undoubtedly be felt within the hearts of Corey and his family for years to come.
