Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson will miss the remainder of the 2026 Major League Baseball season due to a persistent left shoulder injury. Manager Mark Kotsay confirmed the decision on Thursday in Kansas City, noting that the 24-year-old infielder failed to show improvement following a recurrence of his previous subluxation issue.
An Injury-Plagued Campaign for the Young Infielder
The Athletics’ injury misfortune took yet another hit when manager Mark Kotsay confirmed that Jacob Wilson is likely out for the rest of the 2026 season due to his left shoulder injury. Wilson will be placed on the injured list prior to Friday’s series opener against the Astros at Daikin Park. The 24-year-old was already on his way to Sacramento to be examined by a doctor to determine his next steps following a 6-2 loss to the Royals at Kauffman Stadium.
The setback stems from the same shoulder subluxation Wilson initially suffered in May after making a diving attempt for an infield single by Gunnar Henderson. Although he returned exactly one month after his initial injured list placement, he continued playing through lingering physical discomfort. The issue was severely aggravated when Wilson lost full range of motion while swinging.

“Obviously, we’ve tried to give Jacob enough time for the shoulder to respond to get a little bit more movement and be able to do some baseball activity, Unfortunately, this morning there was really no change in how he’s felt since Sunday. … At this point, probably not great news in terms of Jacob’s ability to finish the season.”

Despite the physical ailments that limited him to 80 games, Wilson managed a .266 batting average with seven home runs, 37 RBIs, and a .686 OPS. This followed a standout 2025 All-Star campaign where he hit .311 with 13 homers, 63 RBIs, and a .799 OPS across 125 games. Fantasypros reports that the infielder is heading back to Sacramento to see a specialist, effectively shutting down his year with the expectation that he will be ready for spring training next year.
Domino Effect Across a Struggling Roster
Wilson’s absence underscores a brutal year of health setbacks for the Athletics, who dropped to a 49-79 record after spending 36 days alone in first place early in the year. The team plummeted to a 9-37 stretch over their previous 46 games beginning June 27. Kotsay pointed to the accumulation of long-term injuries as a primary catalyst for the team’s descent.

“We lost our leader and captain in Rook early in June, which impacted not just on the field, but I think off the field. … It seems to be kind of a domino effect with the rest of the group.”

As detailed in roster analysis from Sports Illustrated, the franchise has endured a cascade of major absences, including Brent Rooker undergoing season-ending surgery and catcher Shea Langeliers missing time following trade discussions. Meanwhile, All-Star first baseman Nick Kurtz has battled a recurring right thumb issue, leaving him scheduled to see a hand specialist in Los Angeles after struggling offensively since returning directly to the lineup without a rehab assignment.
Roster Shuffling and Opening Day Casualties
With Wilson sidelined alongside multiple other key contributors, the Athletics are forced to restructure their infield depth charts for the remainder of the schedule.
The team has already utilized Darell Hernaiz, Alika Williams, and Donovan Walton at shortstop during Wilson’s recent absence. Kotsay confirmed that younger players and returning options will now absorb extended playing time down the stretch.
Alika Williams has got a ton of opportunities, Darell Hernaiz is here now and getting some opportunities. Max Muncy is back with us, so those are three guys, because of Jacob’s issue, that are going to see more playing time,
Kotsay explained, adding that the organization have to bring someone now that will help as well.
If Wilson is officially ruled out for the remainder of the year, he will join a group of five players from the team’s original Opening Day starting lineup who have seen their seasons derailed by injuries.
