The Karnataka assembly elections, consisting of 224 members, are scheduled for May 10. The nomination process began on April 17. So far, the Congress party has announced candidates for 166 constituencies, while the Janata Dal (S) has announced candidates for 93. The ruling BJP has released its phase one list of candidates, with names announced for 189 constituencies, including 52 new faces. However, supporters of MLAs who did not receive a ticket protested, resulting in resignations from Minister S. Angar, R. Shankar MLC, and Lakshman Savathi MLC. In response, the BJP released a list of candidates for the second phase, covering 23 constituencies, but denied tickets for 11 existing MLAs, including former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar. This caused outrage from BJP members, with 16 resigning from Hupalli Dharwad Corporation. While former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa appears likely to receive a ticket, Jagadish Shettar has called for a list of candidates for the third phase to be published tomorrow; otherwise, he will consult his supporters and take further action.
